Hello, my name is Evan Hutchison; I’m an environmental studies and German major, and I have been working with the Office of Sustainability since March. While this past year has thrown me some curveballs, there have certainly been some great things to come out of it. A lot of my work is focused on STARS, a sustainability rating system to gauge how sustainable schools are overall. In our prior submission we were very close to receiving a gold rating, so achieving that gold for this submission has been a priority for all involved.
With this being my first year and first STARS submission, there has certainly been a lot to learn. My section in STARS is academics, and after some time figuring out how the categories and criteria worked, I started collecting data for the new submission. While the new systems and platforms we were using certainly took some time to get comfortable with, my team was there to help me every step of the way. Now after having some experience, I reckon that I will feel miles more confident and comfortable working with STARS come time for our next submission.
When looking towards the coming year, I’m eager to see what exactly is in store; the past months have largely been focused on STARS, and I’m looking forward to seeing what other things there are to get involved in. One of the things we worked on other than STARS was a sustainability summit, aimed at getting people involved on campus. Working with my peers to get the community excited and engaged with sustainability on campus was really special, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for us
